Thickened Toenails

Thickened Toenails: Causes and Treatment

Thickened toenails, also known as onychomycosis, are a common foot problem that can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Fungal infection: This is the most common cause of thickened toenails. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, such as between the toes.

  • Injury: Trauma to the nail can cause it to thicken.

  • Certain medical conditions: Conditions like diabetes and poor circulation can increase the risk of thickened toenails.

Symptoms of thickened toenails:

  • Thickened, yellowed, or discoloured nails

  • Brittle or crumbling nails

  • Pain or discomfort

  • Difficulty cutting nails

Treatment for thickened toenails:

The best treatment for thickened toenails will depend on the underlying cause. Here are some common treatment options:

  • Over-the-counter antifungal medications: These can be effective for mild fungal infections.

  • Prescription antifungal medications: For more severe fungal infections, a doctor may prescribe oral or topical antifungal medications.

  • Laser therapy: This non-invasive treatment uses a laser to kill the fungus.

  • Surgical removal of the nail: In severe cases, the nail may need to be surgically removed.

Prevention of thickened toenails:

  • Keep your feet clean and dry: Wash your feet daily with warm water and mild soap, and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.

  • Wear well-fitting shoes: Avoid shoes that are too tight or too loose.

  • Change your socks daily: This helps keep your feet dry and reduces the risk of infection.

  • Avoid walking barefoot in public places: This can expose your feet to fungi and bacteria.

  • Trim your toenails properly: Cut your toenails straight across, and avoid cutting them too short.

If you have thickened toenails, it's important to see your Allied Foot Health practitioner for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Early treatment can help prevent the condition from worsening and causing further discomfort.
