Toe Nail Fungus
Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that affects the nails, usually the toenails. It causes the nails to become thick, discolored, and brittle. In severe cases, the nails may even crumble or separate from the nail bed.
Symptoms:
-
Thickening of the nail
-
Discoloration of the nail (yellow, brown, or white)
-
Crumbling or crumbling of the nail
-
Separation of the nail from the nail bed
-
Pain or discomfort in the affected nail
Causes:
Nail fungus is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. These fungi can enter the nail through small cracks or breaks in the nail. People with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or poor circulation, are more susceptible to nail fungus.
Treatment:
There are several treatment options for nail fungus, including:
-
Over-the-counter antifungal medications: These medications are available in various forms, such as creams, ointments, and sprays. They may be effective for mild cases of nail fungus.
-
Prescription antifungal medications: These medications are stronger than over-the-counter medications and are often necessary for more severe cases of nail fungus. They may be taken orally or applied topically.
-
Laser therapy: Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses a laser to kill the fungus. It is a relatively new treatment option, but it has shown promise in some studies.
-
Surgical removal of the nail: In severe cases, the nail may need to be surgically removed. This is usually followed by antifungal medication to prevent the fungus from returning.
Prevention:
-
Keep your feet clean and dry.
-
Wear shoes that fit well and allow your feet to breathe.
-
Avoid walking barefoot in public places.
-
Change your socks daily.
-
Trim your nails straight across. Avoid using nail polish or artificial nails.
